To create awareness, the Military Forces Flag Day was first commemorated to collect donations for armed troops and to distribute flags to the general public. However, flag day has taken on a far higher significance since it also urges the people of India to take responsibility for caring for and working for the welfare of the armed forces.

  1. The initial Flag Day Fund was created in 1949 by the Defence Minister’s Committee. However, in 1993, the Indian Defence Ministry decided to combine the relevant welfare funds into a single Armed Forces Flag Day Fund.
  2. On Flag Day, the three arms of the Indian Armed Services—the Indian Air Force, the Indian Army, and the Indian Navy—host a variety of cultural events, performances, and other activities for Indian residents.
  3. On Military Forces Flag 2021, in exchange for donations, little flags in deep blue, red, and light blue representing India’s three armed forces are distributed.
  4. In exchange for the donation, the Indian government established the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF) to help in the rehabilitation and welfare of ex-servicemen.
  5. There are around 32 lakh ex-servicemen in India, with an extra 60,000 added each year due to superannuation.
