Koneru Humpy Wins Second World Rapid Chess Championship at 37

New York, Dec 29: Koneru Humpy, India’s leading female chess player, secured her second World Rapid Chess Championship title, finishing with 8.5/11 points. She previously claimed her first title in 2019. Amid a seven-way tie in the final round, Koneru triumphed by defeating Indonesia’s Irine Kharisma Sukandar in a tense endgame.

At 37, Koneru described the victory as especially meaningful, stating, “It’s not easy to become a world champion when you are 37.” Her success adds to India’s stellar chess achievements in 2024, including Gukesh D’s classical chess World Champion title and gold medals in the Chess Olympiad.

Koneru’s consistency shone through, overcoming a challenging start to claim the crown amidst fierce competition.
