The Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) is an indigenously developed man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) designed to detect and neutralise low-altitude aerial threats. It is developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the Research Centre Imarat (RCI).
VSHORADS functions using a dual-thrust solid rocket motor. It is equipped with integrated avionics and operates based on a Reaction Control System (RCS). One of its key features is its advanced uncooled infrared imaging seeker, which enables precise targeting and engagement.
This system offers significant advantages by effectively identifying and neutralising aerial threats at low altitudes. VSHORADS is particularly vital in addressing geo-strategic challenges such as border tensions. It plays a crucial role in a multi-layered air defence network by identifying enemy fighter aircraft and helicopters.
