What Are Articles?
Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. There are two types of articles in English:
- Definite Article – “The” (used for specific nouns)
- Indefinite Articles – “A” and “An” (used for nonspecific nouns)
1. Definite Article: “The”
When to use:
- When referring to something already mentioned or known to the listener/reader.
- When there’s only one of something.
- With superlatives and ordinal numbers.
- With unique objects (the sun, the moon, the Internet).
- With geographical features (the Himalayas, the Nile).
Examples:
- “The cat on the roof is black.” (Specific cat)
- “The sun rises in the east.” (Only one sun)
- “She is the best student in class.” (Superlative)
- “We visited the Eiffel Tower.” (Unique landmark)
2. Indefinite Articles: “A” and “An”
When to use:
- When referring to any one of a general thing (not specific).
- “A” is used before consonant sounds.
- “An” is used before vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u).
Examples:
- “I saw a dog in the park.” (Any dog, not specific)
- “She is an honest woman.” (“Honest” starts with a vowel sound)
- “He needs a uniform.” (“Uniform” starts with a ‘y’ sound, so “a”)
Tips for Using Articles Correctly

Tip 4: “The” is used with countries that have plural names or “republic/kingdom”

- “She visited the Netherlands.”
❌ Wrong:
- “I live in the India.” (Just “India”)

✅ Correct: “Let’s have breakfast.”
Tip 6: Use “the” with musical instruments
✅ Correct: “She plays the piano.”
Tip 7: “A” vs. “An” depends on sound, not just spelling
