The Union government has allocated a record Rs 86,000 crore for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the 2024-25 budget.
This is the highest ever allocation at the Budget Estimate stage since the scheme’s inception.
The allocation for MGNREGS has seen a steady increase over the past few years. In 2023-24, it was Rs 60,000 crore, and in 2022-23, it was Rs 73,000 crore.
The increased allocation reflects the government’s commitment to providing employment opportunities for rural workers and boosting rural development.
The scheme has been instrumental in providing a social safety net for millions of rural households, especially during economic downturns.
